Vision and Core Curriculum

Itz'at Steam Academy's Philosophy Of Education

The vision of Itz'at STEAM Academy is to graduate young people equipped with the knowledge, skills, and integrated experiences in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) necessary to build a sustainable future for themselves and their communities. Achieving this vision requires a forward-looking approach to education that emphasizes real-world experiences, community connections, and hands-on, creative learning. The foundation of Itz'at STEAM Academy's curriculum is built on three pillars that guide holistic student development: Social, Emotional, and Cultural Learning (SECL), which integrates social and emotional learning with cultural awareness to help students develop a balanced self-identity within Belizean culture and as global citizens; Transdisciplinary Academics (TA), which encourages students to think critically and creatively by integrating knowledge from various fields to solve complex problems; and Community Engagement (CE), which focuses on building meaningful relationships with the wider community through projects that foster a sense of responsibility and active citizenship. The curriculum is designed to provide students with meaningful, real-world learning experiences, encouraging them to look inward, look outward, and creatively develop new projects and ideas. This dynamic, three-part Venn diagram approach ensures that all program elements, curriculum, and competencies fall within at least one of the three pillars, with many overlapping multiple areas. As students’ progress through their education, the emphasis on each pillar shifts, providing a range of learning experiences that evolve over time. This unique approach to education at Itz'at STEAM Academy emphasizes thoughtful collaboration and prepares students to address larger societal issues both today and in their futures.

History of

Itz’at STEAM Academy

Itz’at STEAM Academy (ISA), formerly known as the Belize STEAM Laboratory School, is a four-year government high school initiative by the Belizean Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology (MoECST). Developed in partnership with MIT and the Inter-American Development Bank, the academy opened in September 2023 with 63 students and will grow to a full capacity of 300 students by 2026. Located on St Joseph Street in Belize City, the school shares a campus with the ITVET.

The academy aims to create a diverse and inclusive community that inspires students to improve their lives and those around them. It delivers value-driven, competency-based programs using constructionist and problem-based approaches to build knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), as well as Belizean studies, Language, and Physical Education.

As a lab school, Itz’at STEAM Academy is committed to innovative pedagogies and best practices, focusing on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary learning. Digital technologies are integral to the educational experience, fostering discovery, creativity, and new connections within the curriculum.

The educational framework, built upon the Itz’at STEAM Academy Curriculum Architecture, integrates national, regional, and international best practices and standards. This comprehensive approach ensures consistency with the Belizean education system and focuses on the personal, academic, and civic growth of students.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

Welcome to another exciting year at Itz’at STEAM Academy! As your proud principal, I am excited to embark on this journey of discovery, innovation, and growth with all of you. Our academy is not just a school; it’s a community where curiosity meets creativity, and learning has no limits.

This year, we are moving full STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) ahead with our programs. Expect to see robots dancing, art projects, and science experiments! Our goal is to bring out the passion for learning that will last a lifetime.

To our students: Remember, every great inventor, artist, and scientist started with a single step. Do not be afraid to make mistakes—they are just stepping stones to success. Embrace challenges, ask questions, and most importantly, have fun! Your potential is limitless, and we cannot wait to see what you will achieve.

To our parents and guardians: Thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education. Your support and involvement are crucial to our success. Together, we will create an environment where every student can learn and reach their full potential.

Let us make our experiences unforgettable, filled with laughter, learning, and a lot of “STEAM is where Itz’at!”

Learning

Itz’at STEAM Academy programs were designed in collaboration with experts from the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We use a constructionist approach to learning that engages students in hands-on projects that explore real challenges faced by the local community. Our programs have three foundations: transdisciplinary academics, community engagement and social, emotional and cultural learning. They use modern technology to explore the latest knowledge in sustainable development, global humanities, fabrication, art, communication and mathematics.
